Why did you start WRC?
WRC was created by writers, for writers, to bridge the frustrating gap between writer and publisher/agent. Many publishers do not accept unsolicited submissions, due to the liability involved. Agents also limit receipt of unsolicited submission. Both of these scenarios make it extremely difficult (not to mention frustrating) for writers to get their work seen. Writers’ Review Collective hopes to solve that problem.
Why do I have to pay to submit my work?
The answer is simple: Because each reviewer spends a fair amount of time with your submission in order to give you the professional feedback you need to move forward with your work. The reviewers receive the majority of your submission fee, as only a small percentage is set aside for basic management necessities. In other words, your payment is going directly to the professional reviewing your work and providing you with honest, value-added feedback that can only help you in your writing career.
But I can get feedback in my writers’ group for free…
Yes, you can, and we hope you engage in various venues for receiving critical feedback on your writing. This is not a writers’ group, but a collective of professional individuals who have worked in publishing already and know the ’ins and outs’ of what it takes to be a published author. Their review is detailed, informative, and based on their inside knowledge of the industry. You can’t get that in a writers’ group.
How does your process work?
Once you have submitted to WRC, your submission is placed in a queue for our reviewers. We do our best to match your genre with someone from that area if available, though it is not always possible. The reviewer then receives your piece and begins their process. At the end of their review, they fill out a standard form rating the submission on various aspects, such as theme (is it an interesting topic), marketability (is there a market for this topic), and quality of writing (how much editing does it need), to name a few. They then write a qualitative review based on the work itself that is attached to the form. All of this is forwarded to you for next steps, which either include suggestions for improving your work or a request to connect you with one of our publisher/agent colleagues.
How long does it take to receive feedback on my submission?
Our process can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks, depending on our caseload. We do our best to keep the turnaround time as short as possible, while still allowing our reviewers enough time to really dig in and provide you with the most value-added feedback.
What if I want to re-submit a piece for a 2nd round, after making improvements?
If it is within the same calendar year, we offer discounts for re-submission of the same piece, once you have made the suggested improvements. We cannot, however, guarantee that it will go to the same reviewer. We handle these situations on a case-by-case basis, and will always do our best to work with you. Our goal is to be a supportive resource for writers everywhere.
